Costa Rica Palm Oil farms are a big business and can have a positive cash flow for many years with an excellent rate of return. Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient in the tropical belt of Africa, Central America and Southeast Asia. Its use in the commercial food industry in other parts of the world is buoyed by its lower cost and by the high oxidative stability of the refined product when used for frying.
A new African Palm can produce its first pods in about three years after planting, and then regularly thereafter if properly fertilize and maintained. Most all of the African Palms being planted today are hybrid clones that produce shorter trees that are more easily harvested and maintained. A typical Palm Farm can produce up to 30 metric tons of fruit bunches per hectare annually. Palm Farms can produce as much as 7,000 liters of palm oil per hectare. The oil palm is grown extensively in the tropics, accounting for 45 percent of edible oil worldwide.
